Data Centre World VisitorEaton Delivers Secure Power for Sentrum
Energy-efficient Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) from Eaton’s Power Quality division have been selected by Sentrum, a leading specialist in data centre solutions, as the secure power source for critical applications in its principal UK data centres.
A total of 137 Eaton UPS systems are currently installed within Sentrum’s portfolio of data centres and some idea of the scale of these installations can be gained by noting that, between them, they use 25,000 batteries with a total weight in excess of 830 tonnes.
The Eaton UPS systems were selected by Sentrum after its engineers completed an in-depth evaluation of the options available in the market, whilst looking specifically for a solution that ensured high performance levels, a compact construction, versatility and value for money.
“Sentrum is constantly striving to maximise energy efficiencies within its operations, whilst also ensuring delivery of an outstandingly reliable service,” said Franek Sodzawiczny, Chief Development Officer and Co-Founder at Sentrum. “The high efficiencies, and proven reliability, of the UPS system from Eaton caught our attention in particular.”
“We also get first class support from Eaton,” Sodzawiczny continued. “The company’s engineers clearly have a very good understanding of the specific requirements and challenges related to data centre operations.”
The majority of the Eaton UPS systems in use at Sentrum’s data centres are from the Powerware 9395 range which has been designed specifically to support applications that demand the highest levels of protection against power failure. These systems have also recently been recognised by the government’s Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme for their exceptional efficiency.
Powerware 9395 UPSs feature a dual-conversion design with inherent redundancy, making them an ideal choice for use across critical 24/7 applications. By operating at greater than 94% efficiency, they generate less heat than typical products, which in turn creates cooler operating conditions. This translates to reduced facility air conditioning requirements, whilst also extending the life of UPS components and batteries.
In addition, thanks to the transformerless design, all models have a footprint that is up to 60% smaller than typical competitive units. Powerware 9395 UPSs also feature a unique Energy Saver Mode that allows them to maintain excellent total harmonic distortion (THD) performance without the use of inherently inefficient filters.
Prior to supplying the 9395 to Sentrum, Eaton had provided sixteen Powerware 9370 and ten 9315 systems.
