Data Centre World VisitorData doesn’t age
Sims Lifecycle Services will be bringing some interesting examples of historic storage devices and ICT equipment to this year’s Data Centre World Conference and Expo at London’s Olympia. Sims is bringing the equipment along to emphasise that there are still millions of old and obsolete devices in circulation which still contain data, years after the equipment was disposed of. The company is urging organisations to take as much care when they dispose of their data as when it is live and in use.
Sims’ Data Security Consultant, Chris Stevens, explains: “Despite high profile instances of data loss over recent years and the threat of fines from the Information Commissioner’s Office of up to £500,000 for failing to protect data, there are still many organisations who are failing to protect their ICT and computer equipment adequately after it passes outside of their control.
“There is widespread awareness of the need to protect data when it is live and being used on a day to day basis. Yet as soon as the equipment passes outside of their control, many organisations are simply not realizing that residual data far exceeds the life of the equipment and needs to be managed properly. If it is not, they run the risk of data being accessed years after the equipment was disposed of. In some cases, the data can fall into the wrong hands with catastrophic consequences, causing serious brand damage to an organisation or business, notwithstanding the risk of a large fine.”
To prevent this happening and ensure complete peace of mind, Sims Lifecycle Services, is urging businesses and large public sector organisations to seek the services of professional companies who provide guaranteed data destruction of hard drives and data bearing assets.
Sims hopes that the historic examples of ICT equipment on show will be a reminder to delegates that whilst computer equipment ages and becomes obsolete, data does not and that there are thousands, if not millions, of pieces of old and obsolete computer equipment in circulation which may contain sensitive data.
Chris said: “Even data that is twenty years old can still be useful to criminals and the situation can only continue to grow because as the lifecycle of computer equipment becomes ever shorter, the lifecycle of data becomes ever longer.
“We are looking forward to welcoming visitors to our stand to explain our range of reassuring data destruction options. These include our highly secure mobile shredding service, which enables clients to witness the destruction of their hard drives or back up media in person. Visitors will also be able to learn about our WebView asset tracking and reporting system, which enables clients to track the disposal of their assets online. Whichever service is chosen, Sims Lifecycle Services’ clients can be assured of complete peace of mind.”
