Evolution of the silent Cyber war

Register free to attend this session

The Silent Cyber War
This section will discuss how cyber warfare is nothing new, and that hosting companies have been dealing with a constant bombardment of attacks quietly behind the scenes. Memset hosts roughly 20,000 of the UK's busiest Web sites and in one week alone deflected over 200 denial of service attacks and tens of thousands of hack attempts on its customers' servers without them ever noticing.

Distributed Denial of Service attacks (dDoS)
A specific discussion of the Internet's principal weapon of mass disruption, bot nets and dDOS, and what can be done to defend against them.

Purchase key attacks
Despite the more complex technologies in play, still today the most likely source of data compromise is from within the organisation. This section will discuss methodologies to mitigate this, and how cloud can actually greatly enhance defense against this specific threat.

Cloud technologies
Here we will look at the newer cloud technologies and their strengths and weaknesses in terms of both resilience/durability and information security:

  • Hypervisors and cloud compute
  • vLANs
  • Muti-tenanted SaaS
  • Co-located cloud storage
  • • Cloud computing as a weapon

It is now possible to harness huge amounts of compute resource relatively cheaply. Here we examine the actual risks, with case examples (eg. an 8-character password comprised of a-z, A-Z and 0-9 would cost roughly $3,500 to crack), and suitable methods of defense.

The role of government
o We will conclude with our views on the role of government in public Internet cyber security as well as how these matters apply to secure government requirements and the proposed G-Cloud.

Speaker: Kate Craig-Wood

Job title: Managing Director

Company: Memset

Kate is an award winning technology entrepreneur, owner-manager of Memset, and a renowned advocate of green ICT and cloud computing.
Memset, a nationally leading managed hosting and cloud computing provider, has pioneered virtual machine technology since 2002 and was Britain’s first Carbon Neutral ISP.

Kate is also an officer of BCSs influential Data Centre Specialist Group and sits on the main board of Intellect, Britain's high-tech trade association. Last year she co-led the technical strand of phase two of the Cabinet Office's G-Cloud project and Memset has been invited to be part of the G-Cloud IaaS/PaaS foundation delivery partner activities.
