Challenges and Automations for managing very large storage systems at Yahoo!

Register free to attend this session

This presentation describes the management solution for Storage Infrastructure at Yahoo! It’s about how we defined the problem and implemented the solution. The presentation describes the distributed system that manages configuration and provisioning for a large number of storage devices in several data centers.  It describes how the system streamlines storage operations, improves SLA and saves operational costs.

It also discusses the challenges we faced in deploying the system and migrating manual workflows to automated ones.  The presentation also describes multiple safeguards we built in the system to gain confidence of storage architects and operations.

The presentation describes the architecture of the system and how we leveraged NetApp SDK for building the solution. Many of the configuration and provisioning operations done on the device involve multiple steps, various validations and interaction with ITIL systems like Change management and Ticketing. The presentation discusses how these interactions are seamlessly integrated to bring a single pane of glass to manage heterogeneous storage infrastructure.

What will delegates learn from this session?
Delegates will learn the different aspects on introducing automation in managing warehouse scale data centers.

  • What is the architecture of a web scale infrastructure management system?
  • How does one introduce a management system to operations teams?
  • How does one show the value of automation in streamlining operations?
  • How do we transition systems and users to an automated management solution?
  • How to interact between production and corporate systems in a typical data center?
  • How does one drive adoption of tools in operations teams?

Why is this issue of interest to delegates? The amount of storage needs for enterprise and Internet business data centers is growing at a phenomenal rate. Automation is the key to effectively manage large number of heterogeneous storage systems. This presentation is a case study in defining, deploying and making a management system effective. Delegates can see the value of automation in web scale data centers, how they are managed and finally Do’s and Don’ts when transitioning to automated systems.

Who should attend this session?

• Data center managers
• Infrastructure operation engineers and managers
• Storage system managers
• Storage Vendors
• Storage Management Professionals
• DevOps Engineers
