TOPIC: Is the DC powered data centre really more energy efficient? A European perspective
With an HNC in Electrical Engineering, a First Class BSc(Hons) in Technology and postgraduate Diploma in Design & Innovation, Ian’s career has taken him from the design office to sales and senior management.
Seven years with Schindler (lifts & escalators) led to fourteen years with Mannesmann Demag (rotating machines and variable speed drives). During this time Ian wrote numerous technical papers on the subject of variable speed drive systems and presented them at conferences including London, Hanover and Chicago. Moving to Anton Piller in 1991 (manufacturers of static, rotary & diesel UPS) for seven years as Sales Director led to more conference presentations on critical power topics. During the internet boom Ian was CTO with ICW Power, an integrated system house for critical power & cooling solutions, and led innovative design solutions for numerous Internet Data Centre clients. Technical papers were presented at conferences in London, Amsterdam and Barcelona. During 1999-2005 Ian held several posts within the Emerson organisation: UK MD for Liebert, Sales & Marketing Director, UPS for EMEA (Milan) and lastly as Managing Director of Emerson Network Power Ltd – the systems group that comprises Liebert-Hiross, Emerson Energy Systems and Asco. Until March 2007 Ian was Vice President EMEA and Asia Pacific for Active Power, world leaders in flywheel energy storage. Ian has been newly appointed to the role of International Sales Director for Chloride Power Protection, based out of the UK – market leaders in critical power systems. Technical papers on critical power systems include Intelec (Edinburgh and Montreal), IPSS 2004 (Amsterdam & Brighton), IASTED (2005, Spain), EPS 2006 (Sydney & Johannesburg) and CEE 2006 (Warsaw). Power & Cooling Summit (London 2006), Data Centre Dynamics (2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 London, Dubai and New York) and EPS 2007 (Kuala Lumpur). Ian was a co-author for the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers publication Guide K, Electricity in Buildings, in two chapters, UPS Systems and HV Switchgear and is a Chartered Building Services Engineer and Member of CIBSE and Member of The Institute of Engineering & Technology.
